Azores

The archipelago of the Azores is situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The nearest countries are Madeira, Portugal and Nova Scotia, which is however quite a distant from the archipelago.

Carthaginian coins dating back to 300 BC are some of the historical traces found on these islands. According to the stories written and sung by the ancient Greeks, the mythical city of Atlantis was hidden somewhere on these islands whose beauty makes us think of an actual earthly paradise.

Endless beaches of fine white and volcanic sand surrounded by the lush nature and crystal clear water welcome visitors, leaving them breathless each time they reach the coast. Their stay is made even more pleasant by the mild climate that, due to the effect of the Gulf Stream, remains warm but rather windy all year round.

Such great features are sure to promote all the myths related to these beaches. Today, this archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, welcomes thousands of tourists looking for sunny beaches framed by a breathtaking lush countryside.

At this oasis of peace and quiet, visitors can practice sports like hiking, horseback riding, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, paragliding, mountain climbing and much more. For example, the National Park of Geres-paned and Montesinho are ideal for people who like to explore the local natural habitat.

For those who are eager to try something new, we suggest you consider going to one of the many equestrian centres and enjoy the scenery and lush vegetation typical of the archipelago whilst galloping on your chosen horse.

Some of the main cosmopolitan Azorean urban centres are Angra do Heroísmo, Horta on Faial Island, Ponte Delgada, Praia da Vitória and Ribeira Grande on São Miguel, where, due to the remarkable influx of tourists, you will find beaches, facilities, resorts, sports centres, cultural centres and lots of entertainment possibilities.

If you love sailing and surfing, the beaches of Ria Formosa, Carcavelos and Guincho are the three places you just shouldn’t miss, as here you will find many people who share your passions and hobbies.

Last but not least, the Azores offers many private and quiet beaches for naturists so they can take their clothes off and sunbathe all day long.
